About the Department

About Department

According to the curriculum of Bengali language and literature at the University of Calcutta, there is an opportunity to study Bengali for four years in the undergraduate / undergraduate with research program and for three years in the M.D.C course at 'Sundarban Hazi Desarat College'. Currently, under the Credit Based Choice System (CBCS), successful students who undergo rigorous course work over a total of 8/6 semesters can seek their own place in higher education, employment, or other expanding areas of life in the future. Ensuring education, research, and quality assurance is another primary objective of the Bengali department at 'Sundarban Hazi Desarat College'. Alongside continuous extensive intellectual discourse, language discussions, and literary debates, the department emphasizes fostering intellectual and artistic development among its students to enrich their inherent human values. With a lineage of reputation and tradition, the department, with its continuous engagement from ancient to modern Bengali literature, aims to transform into a center of excellence for Bengali discourse one day.

The Bengali department is one of the oldest departments of the college. It began its journey in 1961 with P.U. and pass courses. Later, from the academic year 1996-1997, it started an Honors program with 45 seats. Currently, the university-approved Honors student count is 242, and the General student count is restricted to 500. The department offers studies in various branches of literature, literary theory, rhetoric, prosody, aesthetics, and linguistics. Departmental seminars, wall magazines, etc., contribute to the cultivation of Bengali culture among teachers and students. Every year, at least 10 to 15 students enroll in postgraduate (P.G) programs regularly.

Key Highlights:  The department gathered mass of faculties who devoted their time in teaching the subject. Presently the department has seven full-time teachers including three Associate, three Assistant, and one SACT Professor. Our Principal also is an active and efficient part of this department. The faculty members are quite actively involved in research and teaching activities. The teachers also participate in various workshops, seminars, paper presentation on relevant issues. The success rates of the students are almost cent percent and many of the students are enrolling into higher education each and every year. Cultural Activity is one of the positive features of the Bengali Department. As a co-curricular activity, the department publishes a yearly wall magazine named “UTSAHE” & “AVIJATRI” on regular basis. The department has also organized several departmental seminars, quizzes, debates, Annual cultural competitions, to encourage different soft skills of the students.  Every year we organize Departmental Freashers' Wellcome & Farewel pogramme. We celebrate Rabindra jayanti , Vidyasagar Jayanti, "AMBEDKAR JAYANTI" and International Mother Language Day.  we celebrated 200th Birth Centenary of Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar.  Department also frequently arranges some film-shows on syllabus related novel to enhance the sense of aesthetics and moral values of the students. Apart from the lecture method, the department has always inspired to improve the critical and analytical skills of the students through the seminar by the students, poem recitation and analysis, drama presentation etc.
