Concept Note
The Sundarbans, a mosaic of islands spread across India and Bangladesh, is the largest mangrove forest in the world and home to the famous Royal Bengal Tigers. But apart from the reserve forests, many islands in the Indian Sundarbans are densely populated. Despite its closeness to Kolkata, these back-of-the-beyond islands are largely underdeveloped. The most remarkable thing about the Sundarban delta is the anthropological diversities, and its unique folklore involving Bonbibi, Dokkhin Ray and Manasa Devi. UNESCO that has recognised the Sundarbans as a World Heritage site mentions it as an “excellent example of ongoing ecological processes” apart from it being a “landmark of ancient heritage of mythological and historical events”. Implicit in this Synthesis of the Sundarbans on UNESCO website is an acknowledgment of the confluence of past and present –the spatial continuum of this place in terms of its complex tidal waterways alongside its historical and anthropological significances. The conference is intended to explore three intertwined aspects of the Sundarbans and its people—its social characteristics, cultural practices and economic condition. The social and cultural life in the Indian Sundarbans is informed and conditioned by the occupational hazards of unpredictable nature, that is, fishing and catching crabs in the precarious brackish waters and collecting honey and wax in the tiger-infested forests. The societal structures and cultural practices are consequentially informed by these life-and-death equations involved in earning a life. The conference is aimed at exploring the ongoing saga that is the Sundarbans—its uniqueness in terms of its social, economic, cultural, ecological, demographic and anthropological aspects. The subtext of interdisciplinarity that the conference proposes to stress is consistent with the intersections of these aspects which overlap in this geologically strange archipelago of islands at every turn.
