About the Department

Establishment of Department  -

The Education department of Sundarban Hazi Desarat College came into existence in the year 1961-1962 with education as an elective subject of three years General course. From the session 2008-2009, Honours course in education was introduced in our college. In the session 2018-2019 CBCS (Choice based credit system) has been introduced by the Calcutta University in our department like all other departments.

Presently the department offers Under Graduate Course for Honours and General streams. Students’ performance is evaluated by both internal and external forms of evaluation. Midterm and test examination are conducted as means to evaluate the students internally by departmental faculties. After admission students remain under a process of continuous supervision of teacher. Regular internal evaluation through entry-level test, mid-term test, class test etc. are taken throughout the year.

Students of education department every year organize cultural and social functions like fresher’s welcome, Farewell to outgoing students, observance of teachers’ Day etc. These types of Programmes are very helpful in establishing healthy and congenial pupil-pupil relationship, teacher-pupil relationship and also in identification of the talents of the students in the various non-academic spheres. As natural disasters in the Sundarban delta occur almost every year in one form or the other, socio-economic, educational and political preparedness to face the challenges seems crucial. However, most often, poor families become the worst victims of these disasters, as they lack any kind of preparedness. In this context, how the people of the Sundarbans may become prepared to face natural disaster is a question of concern today. The students are the primary sufferers of any natural disaster in Sundarbans, being inhabitants of the area, and it was therefore of prime importance that they should participate in this discussion. The experiences of the students were shared in this forum, which provided inputs for brainstorming by the academics and social thinkers present at the webinar.

Dr. Annu Jalais shared her experiences during her stay in the Sundarbans for the purpose of a survey. The coexistence of human with nature has been explained lucidly in her lecture. Mr. Jyotirindranarayan Lahiri, Editor, Shudhu Sundarban Charcha and Founder Secretary, Tepantarer Swapno highlighted several strategic issues during natural disaster. He pointed out that same strategy might not be applicable for entire Sundarbans.
